A little over, a little under
Oftentimes when I do a task, I try and decide on the level of "finish" I want to give it.
Sometimes, a task does not require my full attention to detail. It's ok to deliver it a little undercooked and no one is going to get all fussy about it.
In other times, the task is so high-stakes that every little touchpoint matters. I spend a lot of time making sure what I deliver is a high quality product.
I always thought this was a balance - you take some from the under-delivered tasks to give to the over-delivered ones.
It just makes sense.
P.S. This also applies "across disciplines" - it's ok to be a little less productive at work today if you got to spend some extra time with your kid, for example.
The other way around is also ok, and does not make you a workaholic or a neglecting father.
(note to self :) )
